Default 2004 70 hp johnson/suzuki 4 stroke help

Ok heres the deal im getting to buy this motor from the original owner with 123 exact hours on it for 1000.00 bucks!! Yea its a steal i know. But theres one issue....he tried to change water pump himself. Now the motor is telltailing fine at idle and out of gear but once you get up on plane it losses piss stream and over heats! And no its not a up and down transom/motor adjustment problem...it hasnt been moved on the transom and ran fine before. Whats your opinions on possible fixes to this problem? I also understand that these are suzuki motors in omc clothing whats yalls opinion on the overall motor? Im gonna put this motor on my 18 foot chincotegue scow. Thanks for your help in advance

If the problem truly started with a water pump replacement, then it is one of 2 things. Either he didnt get a good seal on the water pump base gasket or o ring, or he opened up the speedo port when he did the pump. There is a blocked off port under the water pump on some SUZUKI lowers, and if it gets opened it will suck air on plane but pump when the lower is submerged. My dad did this to our old 25HP before, bad part was it took the head gasket, exhaust gasket, and engine temp sensor with it.

maybe the water pump was an attempt to solve the prior overheat issue. i'd just pull the foot , inspect and install a new one. did he install an oem or a look-a-like. i know on merc stuff, oem works much better.

FYI, I use Boats.net for my suzuki parts. They have exploded views of assemblies for most every size & model year. Water pump kits are Suzuki brand.

Local tech came over to my house and put computer on it. 127 exact hours. We took lower unit off and PO had stacked 2 gaskets between housing and wear plate. A gasket doesnt even go there thanks to Boats.net exploded views.it created a slop effect and wasnt pumping like it should. Problem fixed. Funny thing is i just sold my 70hp 2 stroke thats on the boat now today for 800.00 bucks. So i have 200.00 invested in this new motor total. Talk about a cheap upgrade!!!!!
