Default What's wrong with my HIN?

Just got my insurance cancelled because my HIN is not good. When I replaced my transom, I made a plate with the HIN that appears in both my bill of sale and my registration; WELA3824M80F20.
Well, the insurance came by to take some pics and underwriting determined that my HIN is not in compliance with USCG requirements of watercraft manufactured after Nov 1st, 1972. It should be a 12 Character Identifier and mine is 14 Character.

Can someone shed some light on this matter?
Thanks!

Leave off the 20 and see if they let it go from that.
The "normal" ID would be the first three letters for the manufacturer, the next 5 numbers would be the hull serial number, the next 2 characters would be the date of manufacture and the last 2 would be the year.
For instance an Ashcraft I have has the ID as ASH (manufacturer), 01084 (hull serial number), C4 (date code), 94 (year model).
My Wellcraft has WEL02524M75I-V20 on the hull ID but I only have it registered with the first 12 characters.

the F20 is the Model number, not HIN, just redo it without the F20 and you should be fine

If I take out the F20, I will have 11 characters and it says I need 12. Still a lost with this issue.

I did some checking, and it looks like you need to have the 20 seperated from the rest. The first 3 digits indicate the make of vessel, the next 5 is the hull serial number, and the last 4 indicates the date it was manufactured. From what I could find some manufacturers used 4 numbers for date of manufacture, 2 numbers for the month, and 2 numbers for the year. Or they used a letter(I'm guessing for the day), 2 numbers for the year, followed by a letter to indicate the month of manufacture. So your hull ID number breaks down to WEL for WELLCRAFT, A3824 for the hull ID number, and M80F for date of manufacture of Jaunuary 1980. The 20 at the end just means 20 foot hull, and shouldn't be part of the HIN. So if you drop the 20, or move it over, your HIN will be configured correctly for a vessel being manufactured from 1975-1984, and your HIN corresponds with it.

Some reading regarding HIN's. http://www.iboats.com/blog/how-to-id...ull-id-number/
