Tach floating

Engine was at a dead idle....like a switch the tach dropped straight down to 800 and was dead solid from there on out....

Should I do some preemptive repairs replacement or just let it ride and see if it happens again? Sign of a bad tachometer or something on the motor side?

1986 Yamaha with original Yamaha tach I am assuming.

If it turns out to be the tach, I have a never used Teleflex I paid about $140...you can have CHEAP...$25 + shippin'...when I get home I send you pix...lemme know..
