You should take the carbs out and clean them up.

Sounds like your jets are varnished in the fuel bowls. The carbs still hold quite a bit of fuel even after it quits running. You have to pull the silencer cover and drain them if you plan on storing it for long term without running it.

Is removing the bowl and accessing the jets something I could do fairly easily myself?

The carbs need to come off to get to the idle and mid range fuel pickup tubes.
