Default Repowering from 90 hp to 130 hp

I am looking to repower my 83 V20. Currently I have a 2000 90 hp Johnson on it. That got up on plain quick and did 28 mph WOT. Unfortunately the port side cylinders were not getting any oil and are now shot. I got approved for a loan on a new 130 hp E-Tec. Will I be happy with this choice? What prop size and pitch should I go with and is there any thing i should watch out for unnecessary things that the sales man will try and sell.

It will have alot more power than what you have, but IMO is still a tad on the small side. 150 is considered to be about ideal for power on a V-20, but the 130 will do the job if your not in a hurry.

i looked at some prices the 150hp is not a great deall more but if you were happy with the 90hp the 130hp will make a big difference i o agree with getting a 150hp but it depends on what you use the boat for and in the future. The 150hp wont work as hard but being a 6cyl may use more fuel its a hard one to decide but with all my boats i like having extra power good luck with deciding its never easy and even look at reale value i think with a 150hp it would be worth more

step up to the 150, you won't have any regrets. Randleman has a 140 Suzuki on his and is pleased with it. Ridgerunner has a 250 on his and wishes he had more. Its all in how you plan to use it.

Thank you guys I will check the difference in price to step up the 150. But i do think i will save fuel going with the 130. I don't mind if i will only be doing around 30 mph. I use the boat for fishing and only go a couple miles off shore.

you will burn more fuel with the 130 than the 150. The 150 is a detuned 200, it can easily make the hp and torque required to push you boat along at 30 mph, the 130 is a smaller displacement engine, it will be working harder and will be turning much higher rpm to achieve the same speed, thus burning more gas. if you want better fuel milage and reliabilty, go with a 150 Opitmax

If you go with an ETEC, they will prop it for you. The ETECS are VERY sensitive to what prop you run on it. Overprop one and you WILL take out the powerhead in no time, under prop it and you will waste fuel, oil ,and chance carboning the engine up from it not getting fully loaded.

Cool

I run a 200hp engine and I'd tell you that is the ideal size for a V. Others will have a different opinion. Really, it's whatever you're happy with speed wise. I like to get to where I'm going in a hurry, and I have a long run to get to the open ocean, so for me, a 200 is almost a necessity.

I think you'll be happier with a 150. Power, fuel economy and just overall performance will be better.

Sad, my 1985 Johnson 150 would push my V20 28mph. Safe to say she was only putting out 90 horses. But she made up for it in reliability. I hope my Mercury holds up as well!
I think a 130 or a 150 will do fine. But I am not excited about your engine choice. A good friend just bought a 60 ETEC. He has had it a year and about seven months it spent in the shop. It would run fine going out but coming in it would miss and shake like crazy. Five dealers later he may have it fixed with a new Ecm. I would buy a Mercury or an older Johnson or Evinrude before a new ETec. But this is just my opinion.
