MJ, I saw the pictures of the damage but didn't read how it happened. I have a 150 Yammie on my V. You had a very similar Yammie 175 on your V prior to the $700 Evinrude. If you had the Yamaha on your V when the wave hit, you wouldn't have made it. Where the air inlet on my Yamaha's cowling is located, it would have drowned the engine in the same situation. With 2" of engine showing the cowling will fill up with water. I never thought about it much, but will now. Maybe I will design a snorkel for my Yamaha cowling in case my V becomes a submarine!
