Default New v 20 owner here

long time lurker here and i must commend the v 20 crowd on their in depth knowledge of these fine boats. I bought a 1990 v-20 cc 2 yrs ago and am just getting ready for the first shakedown run. Been extremely busy. It is powered with a 225 evinrude 2 stroke and it seems a tad overpowered. This is my 12th boat starting in 1972 and primarily fish offshore , however this boat will be a beach cruiser/ sunset watching boat as i fish offshore in brothers 35 intrepid. I really like the style and layout of the boat but can any one comment on a 22 yr old boat with a 225 on the back? Transom seems solid, floor has a small soft spot around console and again i have no intentions of running offshore in this boat. Thanks for the valuable info ive gained from you guys ,ill send pics when i launch next week.

As long as the boat is sound there's no problem with a 225 engine on it. Mine's a 78' with a 225 and I have no problems at all. You should be fine. Welcome to the site

I believe the boat is rated for up to either 225 or 250 hp. you should be good to go.

I have a 1990 V20 powered with a Johnson 175HP and it hauls @$$. I read that it was rated for 225HP, but I can't remember what site. I think it may have been Iboats.com. I'm a newbie V20 owner, and have already had it offshore several miles in both 1-2ft and 2-3ft seas, and it handled very well. I absolutely love this boat and I'm glad I did a lot of research and bought it. The guys on this forum are a WEALTH of information. Welcome to the V20 club.

Welcome!!

No such thing as overpowered with a 225. I almost powered my 83 V20 with a 225 Optimax. My main fishing is offshore, most of the time 20 to 35 miles out. The V20 is a great all around vessel. Before i took her out of comission for some repair work, not only was she a offshore fisher, she was a family boat for watching fireworks, going to the beach, cruising, etc. Alot of our family memories are on her.

Simple transom test is to tilt the motor all the way up and push down on the foot watching for transom movement.

I did the transom test a year or so ago. Im pretty confident the transom is ok. Are you still in the buisness? I am a remodeling contractor and also have a custom cabinet shop. I have been in Ft. Myers 30 yrs and we may have crossed paths at one point. Small world we live in. Thanks.
