Seems to me that if an additive disolves the hoses that it's in, and allows the raw gas to leak out it's not all that "safe". Or am I missing something here?

Sounds like you had a good day then...ethanol got to those old hoses, but if they were original, probably time to change out anyway...glad to hear easy to get to!!
