Default 470 overheats again

Well I'm really bummed, so I ran her for first time after repairs. Started great sounded great ran out and around fir about 30 min at 3/4 speed turned it off floated hung out for a bit. Pulled eng cover everything looked felt good. Started her up cruised back to dock hung out a bit started it again while idling at dock suddenly just quit. No cough no chug just stopped while idling at dock. Pulled eng cover and motor was too hot to touch coolant was good no steam or leaks from anywhere.

I really thought all repairs were done well. Had it done a a shop to get it done right and couldn't do it myself anyway.
New gasket for raw water pump and new oil seals. Newused ex manifold, new used 4" heat exchanger . Risers cleaned and painted. Thermo replaced. What else is there to do to prevent overheating.? Temp gauges not working so I don't know if it all of sudden got hot or what

Where next to look for cooling problem?
Thanks
Scott

Surchin,

Sorry to hear about this...

After having all that work done to your motor, I would definitely make sure you have a working temp gauge.

First thing I would do is take it back to the shop that did the work. I would also double check to make sure that thermostat is good. Maybe you got a bad one? Maybe the wrong one? Just because it's new doesn't mean it's not bad.

Skools, Ferm, or Spare will likely have a better idea of what you ought to check for, but like I said, the first step I would take is going back to the shop that did the work.

I hope it all works out for you...

yeah, i gotta get one of those I/R thermo temp gauges, before i go wiring in a new gauge set. Ill be going back to shop. im not sure if we checked / replaced the impeller in the drive. the project went on for so long and we were so focussed on engine we might have ignored the raw water intake, also it was replaced previous to this project, so may have assumed (bad word) it was good. gotta review mechanics time. Reviewing some past 470 repair posts it seems an overheat may damage this area too. anyway thats where ill start.

question on when it shut down, would an overheat just shut down suddenly? just quit like that? . i though maybe fuel problem but i guess that would sputter before it quit. Plus it was too hot to touch. Also, what mechanism in engine shuts it down when it gets too hot? it would not restart but would turn over. even after waiting 30-40 min.

sorry to hear your problems but i know any class mechanic especially a mercruiser authorized repair shop would let a boat leave their shop with a temp gauge not working! i really would not want to be in your shoes now. good luck for this one.

Default Update

I panicked! Update.... Not an overheat problem! Points! I brought it in yesterday, first thing he questioned was is it getting spark and no it was not . So we cleaned points up and bingo fired up and runs great. I still have confidence with the shop and yes he would fix the gauges but im out of budget for boat at the moment so I'll do that myself.

Took my kid and his bud fishing at sunset last night he is 12 and just startingto get into it. I haven't seen him have so much fun in a long time. Cathing bunch of small mackeral . Gotta get kids off the computers!

Trying to post pics but I got iPhone and not working I guess I need to do the separate link to site- ( have to get my kid to figure it out hah). I'm starting to plan my hardtop cabin project.

Glad you got her back running ok! Yep. points will definately do it. You nood to get yourself a Pertronics Electronic Ignition set and a matching Flamethrower coil. They're easy to install, just follow simple directions. You won't have to worry about that anymore and the starting and performance will be Greatly improved! I replace my raw water pump impeller every other year. The kit only cost 46.00 bucks and its easy to install. And definately get a new temperture gauge, you'll want to keep an eye on your temp from time to time. Yea, take them kids fishing, they'll remember it for ever! My dad took us fishing every Sunday afternoon after church, it was some of the best times of my life!
