That YAMAHA appears to be one of the last 150 carbed engines that YAMAHA made. Yes that engine is legendary my anybodys standards as YAMAHA made that engine with only minor upgrades for about 20 years. It is also a 25" shaft for the one in the ad. If it checks out good I would be all over that one, and I don't even like YAMAHAS.

Default new engine

Thanks Ferm,

It seems like a good deal, maybe too good to be true, so I'll be careful.

Why don't you like yammies?

I've run Mercs for a lifetime (I'm a park ranger & have worked the coast my whole life) Thi slast one 200 offshore has been enough trouble that I'm ready for a change.

I'd have that '08 yamaha checked out by a yamaha or trusted mechanic and find out if the price includes the controls and gauges. Also find out why he's selling. People usually don't take perfectly good working outboards off and sell them without a reason. If it checks out i'd buy it. Check with Willy, Blue Runner, Spareparts, and Whatknot, they've all had experience with those engines.

I just don't prefer YAMAHAS is all. Nothing against em as they tend to be some good engines. I prefer made in the USA if I can find it myself. But also I've noticed that YAMAHAS tend to be some of the slower engines in there HP class.

I have an '04 model - same engine.

The first thing I'd question is whether or not it is really an '08 - can't remember but it seems like '06 or '07 might have been the last year for the carbed 2 stroke? Maybe not, but easy enough to look at the model number and find out.

Mine came w/ a 2 year warranty and I've seen others that had the 2 year warranty. It stands to reason he is selling it because:

a) out of warranty
b) upgrading to 4-stroke
c) he needs a 20" shaft (see the jackplate?) or
d) he's broke as a joke
e) all of the above

Yamaha premium side flush mount controls run low to mid $300's new and cables will set you back another $75 or so. Not to mention the prop which tends to be pretty expensive.

I have had a few Yamaha's and most have been great motors! Bust $$$ for parts and stuff when needed.

Around 06 or 07 YAMAHA quit assigning engines a model year per say, and started making the year of the engine the year it was sold. So in theory you could have an engine that was built in 07, but called an 09 because it was a leftover.

Just food for thought lately I've seen a lot of people in trouble financially as are most of us But they are selling what ever they can off their boats , cars , trucks you name it before it is repossessed. So just be careful he can sign he's life away to you but if he does not own the boat you would in seance being receiving stolen property and they will take it. At that point the only legal way to get you money back is though court and that's a joke all in it self.

Right on the mounting bracket of Yamaha's there is a build date, this will tell you what you have. Mine is DEC04
