Default Epoxy Colorant

I have some fiberglass repairs I would like to do, and want to color the epoxy gto match the hull color.

Has anyone had experience using a small amount of latex paint as the coloring agent?

My rational for this is that I can get a custom matched paint at my local store a lot easier than tinting the epoxy myself. I have contacted Wellcraft who does not have the hull shade on the '84, and the commercial companies such as Mini-Craft or Spectrum are just too expensive for my taste right now.

Go to Sherman-Williams with a paint chip (or a GOOD, EXACT pic of your hull color). They have machines that can duplicate the exact color by scanning the chip. Usually they do it in latex or oil, but they can do it in epoxy paint also. We (the company I work for) needed to do a patch on a garage floor a few years back and they matched the color spot on in Epoxy for us.

Thanks Destroyer. I really did not to use their paint, but rather wanted to know if it is possible to ADD their paint to clear epoxy as a colorant.

I have some glass and gelcoat repairs on the V, and wanted as close a match as possible. My thoughts were that if it would be possible, I could add latex (not oil) based paint to the epoxy, and have the closest match I could get to my hull.

I would be afraid that if you add something, the epoxy wouldn't harden correctly. I assume you have a large area to do? perhaps talk to the experts at the paint store and\or try a small sample first.

If not, I would use this:

I had pretty good luck matching the color or mine.

Thanks. I have tried the "match and patch" type kits, and I guess I'm just too anal, they are not good enough to my eye.

I don't really have that great an area to fix, just a lot of little dings and gouges. That is why I wanted just to color the epoxy.

There are 3 types of epoxy paint.. 100% Solids, Solvent based and Water based. Are we to take it by your desire to use latex colorant that you're using the water based epoxy?
