Interesting?
We put our Rosborough in for the season this morning. We quickly tied the boat up in her slip and headed home to rinse the trailer off etc. When we came back to the boat about 12:30 there was an alarm going off in the boat. I wasn't sure what it was. I was thinking it could be the CO sniffer or gas sniffer as I fueled the boat up before we launch in the morning. When I open up the boat I found that I had left both VHF on and they both had picked up a distress call through the DSC. First time I have ever seen that happen. There was a 9 digit # listed on the VHF. Seems that without the GPS sending a signal to the VHF it will pick up a distress call in the region not just in your area.

Anyone else ever have something like this happen? Scared the crap out of me because I thought I hit the DSC button or something.

I found the comments very interesting...

Most people seemed to think right off that the boaters were idiots and should be charged for their rescue. It was assumed that they didn't have a radio because they other boat called it in. I am thinking it is possible that their electronics my have been shorted out with the battery under water.

However, if they did go out 15 miles with no radio, then yes, idiots.

We all know that the V20's have a history of transom problems, so we all keep an eye on them. A nubie to boating might not know and probably wouldn't know what to look for. I'm wondering if it was a V20. Sure sounds like it.

No radio = no brains.

As to the comments section, I wonder if the same people that said they should have left them because of the cost would worry so much about the cost if it was them out there in the cold water. We pay taxes for a number of reasons... Fire and Police services and yes, Coast Guard rescues are just some of them. Three cheers for the other boat crew for picking them up and for the Coast Guard for yet another in a long line of rescues.

(Good point about the radio shorting out. Yet another reason to have a battery powered handheld in a waterproof bag as well a console mounted unit.)
