I always fill the filter when i change, also a 3 year old ball is probity on its way out if not already gone.
I had one almost 2 years old and junk! For $10 I change every year now as i don't want to have issues out on the water, been there done that! Get a good one and ck in the store, it should suck your hand when pumped, I have had a few that are junk right in the box!
