Default Hey Tsubaki, ossabaw pics

These are some cool pics from an Ossabaw hunt. The guys with the chainsaw reminded me of the guys you talked about on Wassaw that dropped one on a tent.

Tsubaki and FWB if you guys are going to do that hunt this year or whenever the season is next let me know, I will swing by and pick up Blue Runner and join you fellows if you got room in your camp.
Always wanted to go after them toothy piglets. Never have.
Can you do this hunt with a bow? or gun only? either way I come prepared.

You got that right, I have renamed Richmond Hill "Little Jersey". But you can't blame them.

Randleman, I like wild pig meat but it's different. I talk to chefs in Atlanta that ask me if I can get "Ossabaw Pork". I don't know that there is much difference in that islands pigs and anywhere else, but chefs always have to have something "exotic" and exclusive.

Willy, Tsubaki could probably tell you more but I'm pretty sure the Ossabaw trip is a quota or lottery trip. I'm all for getting together for a hunt.

willy and fwb, all the Ossabaw hunts are quota hunts and may take up to 5 years of rejection applications (priority points) in order to be picked for those hunts.
The island for some reason has a lot of appeal to many people. It's normally easy to access, the State people are usually very helpful, even taking you to your drawn hunting location and picking you, your game and hunting stuff up, supposed to even have hot showers.
I only applied once and didn't get picked, for me not knowing where I might be hunting on a specific day of the year and having to plan time off and possibly not going just didn't appeal to me.
A party of up to 5 applicants may apply together for rejection or approval.
There were 2 hog hunts, Jan 21-23 and Feb 25-27. Apply by Dec 1 for lottery drawings. Quota of 100 hunters each.
This is how the hog/deer hunts broke down last year.
Apply by September 1.
Archery Oct 22-24. Quota 100.
Primitive Weapons Nov 5-7. Quota 100.
Firearms Parent/Child Nov 26-28. Quota 75. Apply by Sept 15.
Firearms Oct 8-10. Quota 100.
Firearms Dec 10-12. Quota 100.
As far as I know, all the hunts allow use of archery, regardless of hunt status.
Some of the hogs may not be edible, depending on their diet. If you get one that has been on a marsh/snail diet, you will not be able to eat it. I can't describe it but it is much like the difference in eating grain fed ducks as opposed to fish eating ducks.
Lots of other stuff goes on there.
http://www.ossabawisland.org/indexa.php?docid=97

At one time the National Geographic did an article on the hogs, there was even some argument weather to have them listed as their own species, being they were there so long.
If ya'll need more info just holler!

Not to thread-jack you....& I'm pretty sure I've told this story here before. Anyhow, I got me one of them there wild pigs right near my house with my 30-06. Yeah, thaz right, in the heart of NC where they don't even exist! Well, all I can say is one did exist, perhaps two, and neither are probably still here - one for sure is not!

The story is a guy that lives about 2 miles from my hunt traps those suckers down in SC. Well before thanksgiving he gets the idea to bring 2 (1 male 1 female) home with him to keep in a pen. Planning to fatten them up for a turkey day slaughter. Long story short they both escaped and at least one of them lived unhappily ever after when he (the male) walked into my cross-hairs to get some easy corn from my barrell feeder. I had to rub my eyes, slap myself, and was just in sheer disbelief. My first thought was its a black lab?? Anyway, one I did the positive ID I squeezed and put one right in his neck. Poor fella fell over in his tracks - 2 quick leg kicks and DIRT NAP.

Say hello to my little friend - flying squirrel that I hunted with one evening!

SH!T How'd THAT get in here??

Very cool Blue!
And the nocturnal tree rat! Those look a little darker than the ones around here.
Forgot to mention, there are 6 management area's along the Altamaha River having special hog hunts March 1-10 involving over 73,000 acres with a combination of swamp, river bottom and high ground. And the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge will have one March 13-21, about 20,000 acres are allowed to be hunted there.
