Transducer Placement
I've had my transducer banging around loose in the bilge for too long. I can't decide whether to epoxy it down and shoot thru the hull or drill and mount it right on the keel. I know I'll lose some power shooting thru. Anyone mount a thru hull right on the centerline? I had the same unit (FCV667) on my Hydrasports and had the ducer right on the keel. Thanks

I put a thru hull 20dg on mine and it always reads. I can measure it off keel to the stbd side and from the stern if you want me too.
I posted pics if you search under my name when I changed out my motor and took pics of the job. ps I have a Furuno. If you check under my posting when I changed out the motor in my boat it shows the thru hull installation also.

I didn't want to take the chance on having a air bubble in the glass and so I installed this thru-hull, this ducer is a 20degree offset. I have had it in there now going on 2 years and it hasn't failed to read yet.

Put the boat in the water and turn the unit on and move it around in the bilge to see if it reads in the area you want it, if it doesn't then the glass has a air bubble in it so stay away from that area.

I've heard that Vaseline works well for the testing. I tried using a water filled baggy and some type of caulking that I knew would clean easily. I didn't have great consistency w/ either method. Unfortunately I couldn't be laying in the cockpit shoulder deep in the bilge to confirm placement and reading the screen on the console. The gf unfortunately isn't real good reading the ff, and there's no way I'd get her to lay on the floor w/ her arm in the bilge. I'll have to recruit another assistant.
As far as the bedding material, I've been told not to use 4200/5200 due to signal loss and the possibility of air bubbles. My mech suggested some type of slow cure thin epoxy. I'm looking for an answer to that one too.
