i got my mariner 150 outboard on the stand i got from harbor freight ..
gonna start working on thermostats, new hoses, etc. and a general clean up. looks like the previous owner kept the boat in the water and there is a lot of crap on the mounting area. only problem is that even with it mounted on the lowest holes, the skeg hits the engine stand foot. maybe if i tilted the motor up, it would fit the stand better. saw the manual release on the side of the motor .. loosened it, but still was not able to lift the engine to tilt it. can i use a jumper wire and a battery charger to get the tilt motor to run? also, the motor sways from side to side on the stand ... it leans to one side and gets very tippy on the stand. it would be a lot safer if i could get it centered. what is the best way to lock the steering to get the motor to be centered and keep it there? blocks of wood???? i am sure someone here has some experience with this.. thank in advance. |

could you build a platform out of lumber like a deck just big enough for the stand to sit on.2x6 or larger whatever size is needed.cheap easy fix imo. Downside would be if stand has wheels it would need to be mounted stationary to the deck as to not fall off. Also unless you mount wheels to bottom of deck it will not be able to be rolled around shop.Hope this helps.

doe's you motor have a trim/tilt switch on the side of the motor, if so, you should be able to hook up the battery cables to a battery and trim with that switch.

I'd mount a couple of 2X4's to the stand to keep the skeg centered.

still did not figure how to hook up a battery or battery charger to tilt this motor..tried loosening the manual release nut and lifting by hand, but no go ..pulled pretty hard, but did not move. hopefully something is not jammed up.
orig owner stated that the switch in the engine cover did not work ?? anyone know what wires and where to apply 12v to to get this motor to tilt up and down on my engine stand? thanks in advance for the help. |

On the one I had, the pump was remote mounted. I'm sure yours isn't like that, you'd have to disconnect the hoses to remove the engine.
Follow the wires from the pump to their location in cowl. If you are comfortable with disconnecting those two, do so. With a battery booster, clamp one wire with the alligator clip, touch the other wire to the other alligator clip. If the pump runs and the motor goes the wrong way, reverse the wires. And be careful, even on a real good engine stand outboards are dangerous to maneuver. Think about getting one of their engine hoists also, cheaper than a hospital trip or having to find other engine parts if it gets away from you while repositioning. Also, If you don't have one of these, get one. http://www.mbsmfg.com/mercury-marine...ting-ring.html

thanks for the reply tsubaki ...
i did get one of those lifting rings .. and i also have a borrowed engine hoist attached to the ring even while the engine is on the stand.. i agree with you that the engine on the stand is still tippy, so i keep the hoist attached just in case. will look for those wires and try with my charger to see if i get any movement up or down.
