Oh dang it! I can't remember the name of the electronics that projects that info. I think it is required on all vessels for trade.
On a personal boat it would be a huge safety addition if you were over due and no one knew where you were. (yeah, I can see willy's wife now)
Seen it on a show about this marine salvage company that hated it cause their position is broadcast all over the internet and their competitors could record their movements.

The electronics are available thru West Marine for small craft, it's called AIS. Just got the new mailer and they had the link.

There is a site where you can see the weather conditions the ships are experiencing......I can't remember where I saw it........let me think.

Yep AIS. It is required on ALL commercial vessels and works through your VHF and GPS. It is a signal broadcast through the airwaves and your chartplotter and interfaced radars can display the vessels with pinpoint accuracy for you. Also the commercial fisheries industry down here is requires all commercial fishing boats to have one on them as well.

I am commercial but a small boat and there is no such requirement for us, but I am sure all the big boats have it.

Wow!!...If I were a terrorist and wanted to do harm to a ship at sea(or in a harbor w/lots of people around) that'd be a great tool...
