Definitely the relationship is a factor - one of several. Another is lawmakers' lust for power. They would like to be "in control" of one of our major industries and have the Big Three beholden to them. And at no cost to them, because remember it's the taxpayers footing the bill. And lawmakers want to be able to dictate what sort of automobiles the Big Three will produce (green), which will have to be sold at a loss because consumers aren't really keen on them at the moment with relatively cheap gas prices, which will push the Big Three into even poorer financial condition. They can't run the country, they sure as hell can't oversee Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so what makes them feel they're qualified to oversee the auto industry? The audacity of it all.
