After asking questions on several different boards about this motor, it would seem that I did the belt correctly.
I also was able to open the "tell tale" (pee hole). It took several hours of poking with various wires and zip ties, digging out the 40 years worth of dirt stuck in there. I finally broke it loose yesterday using penetrating oil and compressed air. That motor starts as good as my 2003 Johnzuki 4 stroke.
