Well, its official....Seems we spun the main bearings on the crank. I am sick with the thought of only having my V since May and already having to repower. This is a classic example of someone getting the screws put to them buy a dealer. I was told that all I would have to do is put spark plugs in ever year and make sure and change the oil and it my motor would last for years to come. What they didnt tell me is there was no self oiler system hooked up nor did I even have the small reserve tank on the motor and not knowing what to look for, I never had a clue . I know I shoud have taken it to a mechanic to be checked out, but I didnt and thats my expensive lesson. Its a shame that there are people in this world that will turn a life long dream of buying your first boat into a nightmare just to put a little cash in their pockets . We may be down, but were not out, I am looking for a 150-200 yamaha (hopefully something that is compatible with my old controls) to repower. I have about $1000 saved at this point and am adding to that weekly. If anyone knows of anything like that close...From somebody that can be trusted... Please let me know. Thanks guys

Welcome to boating!! all my boats were nightmares when I first got them!!
1 1964 Hawkline 17, 1973 60 hp Johnson, had 2 weeks and riped the lower unit off on a rock. then the shifters went and aso on, got a newer motor for it, and sold it

2 1975 V20 I/O, went thru everything and spent thousands!! for the motor to die! Converted to OB 1986 Yamaha, lasted 3 years or so thn the oil injection went and took the motor with it! Got a 1994 Yamaha to replace and it was junk out of the box, got a Evinrude and lasted tillIgot hit by a 10 foot wave last summer, fixed and sold bot afterthat with the motor on it.

3 1984 23' Sea Ox w/a boughta motor off ebay 1986 225 Evinrude. workeds well tillit kind of fell apart a monty ago. Now has a great running 175
erc on it, little small but works fine!!


So get use to it, itnever stops!!

BigDaddy, sorry to hear about your motor, but as MJ says, we've all been through many trials and errors with our boats - and we keep putting our hard earned money into them.

I am actively looking for new power, so let me know what you have in mind and if I come across something interesting in So. Fla., I will let you know.

i just bought a boat that sank from an ins company. it has a 03 150 carb yamaha on it. the motor was pickeled and i have it running, the carbs need a good cleaning. i also am looking at a 99 130 optimax. if your interested in any of them I will keep you posted...

You guys are great! Not one of you said anything about how much I was whining (sorry, but I just came from the mechanic and was on my 5th beer) about how terrible I had it. I do agree with the whole B.O.A.T. thing but I made a commitment to drop ALL my extra money, and some that isn't into our boat. The wife and I had a talk last night about maybe cutting our losses and letting go of the "V". It took about two hours but, we convinced ourselves that we have waited a LONG time to have our own boat and we would repower it. In the short time we were able to use her, the boat was flawless and really a joy to be in. I then went as far as saying that if nothing more than senimental reasons, we would always have this boat. Builder, I am also in So.Fl., I'm lookin for nothing less than 150 and preferrably something I can use my existing controls with (yamaha). Phatdaddy, I'll be looking serious in about 3 weeks, keep me in mind.

1989? 20 Foot Mako - $6500


1999 Yamaha salwater series 150 (bought in 2000) 2 stroke with SS prop. Motor is in perfect condition other than a few paint chips missing from the cowling from fishing it.
I took it 25 miles out and never worried about it.. If you look at the key hard enough the motor will start. It's a great engine.

It comes with a seastar hydraulic cylinder on the motor. They are about $700. Motor also comes with 2 yamaha digital gauges and the wiring for the gauges. It does not have control cables or a wiring harness.

As far as the boat, I know you're not looking for one but....she's got a bow rail and a bimini top that comes with her. She needs a little cosmetic work. It depends on what you're looking for. She will clean up really nice.

The deck has some soft spots but you can expect that in an older boat. I would paint the deck if you're into looks.
The last time I took her out I smelled gas in the bilge, but I never investigated it because I had just bought a 20 foot wellcraft
and was in the process of restoring it. After I finished the wellcraft, I had this motor on it for a couple of months.

Then, my dad GAVE me a 150 4 stroke because it had to much power for the boat he just bought. (lucky me)

So I used a few hydraulic steering parts from this boat to complete my restored wellcraft.

Here is a list of what you would need to buy to get her on the water.

Seastar helm pump. about $300

Hydraulic hoses to run from the helm pump to the hydrualic cylinder on the motor. About $70

Binnacle (the forward and reverse thing) about $150

conrtol cables about $100.

Yamaha wiring harness. about $75.

The Mako may or may not need a new gas tank. Might be a loose hose.
If it does need a new tank, It will be real easy to replace because thew console is empty.
Just unscrew it. pull the tank and drop a new one in.

This boat is the perfect buy for someone with a little bit of go get 'em attitude who wants to save a ton of money.

This was my 3rd mako and a great all around boat. I've found the best way to buy a boat is to get a used hull that needs work and put a great motor on it. It's the motor that gets you home after all. (not how pretty the boat is.)

I am only concerned with the motor being very reliable, and this one is. Always serviced and never left me, never.

Blue book on motor in good shape is $4200. This ones in great shape.

Anyway, I hope this helps BD. I am TOTALLY honest about the motor and the boat and what she needs. I would expect the same from anyone I was buying a boat from.

From reading your post I assume you just added gas and never mixed in oil. I'm just curious how long did it run before it died? Good luck with your search for a new motor.

great deal whatknot, but im a little short at this point but i will keep you in mind deffinetly and maybe if youve still got it in a month and a half or so... As far as how long it ran with no oil, i caught it in time that it didnt stop running, it will fire right up right now (it just ticks). Since we never went anywhere except for the ICW, She was never "put through her paces" so to speak in the minimum wake zone and as bad as i wanted to test that ole 200 i never got the chance. The mechanic said it might run for another year or it might run for another 5 minutes. Thats not what i would call reliable enough to take the wife, kids and new grandson out on. The good news is the repower fund has grown to almost $2000. Get this, i even cut back on the beer to be able to put more money in the barrel, tell me thats not dedication...lol
