Brad - What I've found after attempting several of these projects is that you can build your own stuff, but in the end it'll cost you more (or close to the same) and you waste SO much time. You can find often find engine stands on craigslist or at local marina/boatyards for less than the harbor freight job. I got several Cast Iron Mercury stands for $100 each. bolt a plywood laminated beam between 2 of them and you can hang 4 outboards.
Sure you can make a lifting eye with pipe and some welding . . . but for $35 which is the price of the lifting eye from a dealer (why bother) you only need one. Get'r done or that v20 project will take a decade.
