Default Balancing Act

The V is going into the shop next week. If the news is bad, I'll be in the market for a new(used) outboard. I've got a '91 Yammi 200 on her now. What is the best compromise between speed and fuel economy? I like the way it ran w/ the Yammi 200. I've heard that other motors in the same size may be faster. I topped out at just over 40 w/ the current motor. She is very thirsty w/ the current setup. I've seen some pretty good deals on used 150-225hp engines. Is there a "perfect" engine for this boat. Thanks

Quite a bit of good reading here lately in this one. A YAMAHA 150 or a 2.0L MERCURY 150 would be my 2 choices for a center console. For a cuddy I would also include the SUZUKI V6's as an option IMHO. And if speed isn't a concern, a V4 JOHNNY-RUDE 130/140 LOOPER would be a good economy option. If looking for cheap grunt, the 200/225 JOHNNY-RUDES can be had pretty cheap.

If you have to remove or replace the motor, go ahead and add a hydraulic jack plate.
The engine will be a couple of inches higher out the water than present and you will gain a 5" capability at idle speed in shallow water.

I think the perfect motor for a V-20 is a 140 Johnson/Suzuki 4 stroke. Mine tops out @ 40 mph and gets 5 mpg when you run 20-25 mph.

If you can afford one, RM speaks truth. Not going to set the water on fire, but you can't deny his EXCELLENT milage.
