50 hp merc lacking fuel
My 1981 50 hp merc runs but starts starving for fuel. I have replaced all the fuel lines and rebuilt both carbs but it runs out of fuel. If I prime it when it starts to die it will stay running until the primer bulb geos soft and then it will die out. Any suggestions???? Thanks for your time.

1st check the oil. I had a lawnmower that did the same thing. (I know it's a bad comparison...but) I just added oil and she ran like new. You may have to change your oil though. Older engines were built to last as long as you simply keep it up. If this doesn't work, new Mercs are Just as good...

Check your fuel pump. Also I understand there is a passage through one of the carbs that runs the fuel pump, and if you put one of the carb gaskets on wrong the fuel pump won't work.

Could be a restriction in the tank/fuel line as well.....does the bulb get sucked flat?

It's probably one of the things that Ferm said, but I had a fuel problem one time and it was the spring loaded ball bearing type anti siphon valve on the top of the gas tank.

It seems like there have been many reasons for lack of fuel. Another popular problem is the actual lack of fuel. This goes out to everyone. Make sure you put fuel in your gas tank. just sharing. lol
