I don't know, you could probably do a little research and compare the 160 and 276 sonars to see the differences. Like you say, the 160 probably isn't as good. I've had a Garmin 250 (b&w) fishfinder and Garmin 172C plotter for about 4 years or so and the fishfinder went on the blink once. I fixed it easily, but now looking back I cannot remember what the problem was? Something with the wiring I believe. The plotter has never had any problems.
I'm a pretty basic guy in that I don't normally go for the top shelf with consumer goods. If there is something that will "work for me" and not break the bank I will go with that. I'm pretty sure I could catch as many fish with the Garmin 160C as any garmin Fishfinder. BTW a friend of mine used to have the 160 b&w and I liked it. That was about 6 years ago. At the time I bought the 250 b&w the only reason I bought it was because the 160 was near the same price back then. Good luck and let us know what you decide. Blue
