well, my pop is getting on in years and isnt quite what he used to be.
when i was pulling the outdrive i couldnt get the pin out so while i went to get a block of wood my pop was wailing at it with a hammer.
he hit the threads a couple times and there was just no way to get a nut on them.
you name it, i tried it.

sounds to me like when he was thinking of the best way to explain how to tie a rope round a dogs neck to us slower folk, he cross threaded his nut.

next time that happens, find you somebody in camaflouge briches with a farmers tan. he'll take a file to them threads quicker than you can put a necklace on ur dog!

i tried a needle file, i tried to chase them, i tried to thread the nut on to cut its own threads and even tried to force the dam thing.
thought i had it but when i put it back together it just snapped off.

You could try filing the first thread off, tapering the end of the stud, and go to NAPA and get a die nut and run it on to straighten out the remaining threads.
