Default advice on untaking a outboard rebuild?

I have a question for those who have been through the process before and maybe willing give some advice.

What is the success rate of the average outboard rebuild? I have heard most only last 100 hours or so after being rebuild. Is it something a non-professional, but mechanically inclined individual like myself can tackle and expect some level of reliability for the motor afterward? Is machining an issue or can any good machine under take the task? Any pitfalls I should look out for.
