Jackplate thoughts

I am in the middle of a transom rebuild and I wanted to get some thoughts on using a jackplate with a 10 inch setback. The transom is notched to 20 inches but I am looking to repower and that would allow me to use either a 20 or 25 inch motor and if I don't get a newer motor then I can still use the one I have, and I also have an idea for a casting deck or removable seat and want to set the motor back a bit.

I like the jackplate idea (mine's a 5 1/2) but have no input to the casting deck portion.

Actually, when I was searching the site for info your detailed pictures were a huge help. My 78 has a big spashwell and if I set the motor back a bit I can get the seat/platform in. I don't have it fully figured out yet but I have a good idea for it. Then again maybe I have been reading the site to much and caught the modification bug.

Have you considered the impact to your steering setup? If your currently using a cable based system vice hydraulic, make sure you can bend the cable enough if your going to set the motor back any distance from its current position.

Yeah I was looking at that. I would need to bring it up and back a little.

you should make the transom a 25 inch while you are redoing. never leave one a 20" these days.

Yeah Skools, I know I should but my current motor is a 20 and I would have to repower. Is it really worth it making it a 25?

I have a 5" extension kit for that motor if your interested.

yeah you really should go to a 25" keeps water out of the transom. we have several members that have sunk due to low transom in rough water.

i agree i wouldnt run a 20" in seas unless it had a full splashwell
