I still question how important the wood is to the stringer. I know its supposed to help distribute the loads excerted by the motor but it still would seem to me that the fiberglass bears more of the load. I see that the old Makos and some other manufactuers used foam for their cores. The V20 does not have a particularly strong stringer system to begin with in my opinion. I often wondered if the wood was just there as a form for the glass.

Stringers, hmmm. If there's one thing I'm not 100% sure about would be the stringers on my '72. Not because I notice anything suspicious (besides previously rotten transom) but the thing is I can't see them.

What I do know is I used the boat about 20 times over a year's time and never noticed a problem with floor or stringers - and that was before the new transom!!

But, just because the floor seems solid and you don't notice a problem, does that mean the stringers are solid?? ??? ??? ??? The only way to know for sure would be to see them right?

Here's an ad I put on Craig's List. I have more pictures, but none are great:

I am freinds with a boat builder. He uses foam boards for stringers, decks, everything. His boat are rock solid 70 mph flats boats. I would not hesitate to replace with foam, reglass and go fishin.

Got any pics and info on that stuff, could be sweet for several guys here. I like that idea, rebuild a 20 or more year old boat with the same materials they are using to make these high price boats today ;)

I had seen a thread some where? about a company that sells preformed foam stringers that have the fiberglass attached. All you have to do is cut them to length and set them in and wet them out. This system is used on some production boats. I will try to find a link to the website and post it. I chose to bench layup my stringers with cossa as a core but that will be a future thread...

Seems to me that'd be great for production runs, but if you got enough "wet glass" around to glass 'em in, you might as well do the whole thing... ;)...
