i use a 5.5 foot conventional rod i got from wal-mart for $5. bucks with a penn peerless number 9 levelwind with 15 lb berkley solar collector green mono.
on the other end i use a hook with a piece of bait on it.
usually a local spearing which i net myself or a strip of searobbin belly. sometimes local squid.
