Default OMC Flywheel Magnets

As I hope none of you have this problem but i'm sure all have or will if you own a Johnson / Evinrude, If your motor is miss firing and running rough or no fire at all check your flywheel for broken, missing, or loose magnets. I've had a few in the yard that either had crazy firing issues or no fire or no battery charging or tach. It was all due to loose and broken magnets. If you call OMC they offer a Magnet epoxy kit for $14.99 per magnet which doesn't hold either. Just go buy a box of Davcon 5 Min Epoxy and glue them all in with it. Avail at Lowes for $14.95 a box. I just repaired 3 or the 4 flywheels i had broke with only half the epoxy in the box. No they don't have a certain location but they do need a fingers spacing or line up with holes and flywheel flutes.

A 225 Flywheel with out Magnets after being cleaned

Magnets laying out from the flywheels

A 225 Flywheel with the magnets epoxyed back in place, notice the box beside the flywheel is the epoxy used for them, works better than OMC's

Another shot of the magnets re-epoxyed in place

Here's the timing part of the flywheel so that's why these magnets have no certain location.

The guy that bought my boat said that the magnets were the cause of death for my motor, or at least what left me stranded (and set in motion my selling the whole rig). Magnet(s) fell off, trashed the stator, and partially jammed the flywheel. They seem to be an achilles heel for an otherwise bulletproof engine.

Skools,
If you have a need for a flywheel off a '87 175hp Johnson that's missing a couple magnets, it's yours for the cost to ship it. Shoot me a PM if'n you want it.

Skool's I wish I had read this a week ago!!

I'm working on Merc 90hp 3clylinder and the flywheel lost a few magnets. I bought another 3cylinder flywheel w/ the same casting number 261-9007-c2 off ebay (Mint condition) but the tapered keyed hole for the crankshaft was too small for the crank.

I was wondering about the inner circle of magnets and what their function is . . . and actually talked to a machine shop about reaming out the center hole. After pricing it out It made more sense to buy a used one off ebay for $50 . . . had I known . . . I would have tried to pull the magnets off the good flywheel and glue them on the old one.

Good stuff, Skools...my old ''gas suckin rude'' had to have mags glued back one time...they were still in place when she died (couple of years later)...matter of fact, the OMC tech suggested that may have been the source of the rattle I was hearin' (turned out wrong) , so apparently it's a pretty wide-spread prob... ;) :)...
