I would like to see the general idea revived, with a few minor modifications. 1. Enlarge it in all dimensions by 10%. This would bring LOA to 22 feet and beam to 8'6". This would help compensate for today's heavier motors and heavier people. 2. Raise the front deck and windshield each a few inches. Seeing a foot of green water coming over the windshield at you can raise your stress levels. 3. Full transom with bracket and a built in swim platform. Not a European swoopy thing, just an easier way to get in and out and mount a big outboard. 4. Higher Quality construction and of course, no wood. |

Listen... I love the look of this boat as much as the next guy. What you have to remember is, this is a 65 year old hull design. Yes, it’s timeless. Yes, it’s a decent ride. Yes, it’s got a huge following. Second only to Boston whaler, from what I can see. BUT........ it’s still a 65 year old design. The new crop of deep Vs is a completely different animal. The gradys. The yellowfins, etc....... these things cut chop like a hot knife through butter. The difference in ride quality is night and day. I love the V! That said, if I could afford a contender or a regulator or any one of a hundred other similar hulls....... I’d jump on it!

The V-20, like any machine, has compromises. I don't see anything spectacular about the hull, especially compared to current designs. The quality control also sucked. That said, I have never been on another boat that functions better as a whole than the V-20. What sells me is the layout. With the V, you get 360 degree fishability like a center console, you get dry, lockable storage, a huge, deep, safe cockpit, and in calm water you can still sit on the bow and sunbathe if anyone does that anymore. I would love a Judge 27 hull, with an interior layout like a giant V-20. An average human could probably sleep in it, and maybe have room for a head as well. Still trailerable and could be powered with a single 350 Suzuki dual prop. And you could fit three rods in each side's rod holder cutouts. I don't know if they would sell today or not. Everyone is more worried about buying something that impresses the neighbors rather than thinking through what works best for them. Thats why you cant give away anything other than a center console these days. |

I think a big part of that is that today***8217;s center console is pretty much a cuddy, as well. Anything over a 24 CC has space inside the console. The bigger ones have a nice size space under there. Also, I look at some of these new, bigger center consoles, teak and varnish and just luxury and I have to wonder who the hell is swinging a bloody tuna over the gunwale?!? That tuna blood probably doesn***8217;t come out of leather.

And of course the cost of entry to get a used V a lot easier than the newer boats. Even factoring in replacing transom if rest of boat solid |
