Did the electronics die when you started the boat? It sounds like a grounding problem. Hows the battery connections/terminals? Were they reinstalled in the spring?
I too am confused about the gauge cover??? My gauges are one piece, go in from the front, and are secured by the standard "U" shaped steel strap from behind.
