So they actually made these things. I love the freeboard on her!
Time for the To get started on a.

Repower options are rebuild the 165 or find a nice long block. anyone have any bright ideas? This is my first CC could not afford the 254 MAKO yet. LOL She looks to be pretty seaworthy good enuff for the Great Lakes.
The V20 is just as seaworthy as any Mako. I take my V out more than thirty miles in the Gulf. I wish I can help you with the engine. But I like outboards. All I can say is bracket and a 200 Mercury but then that would not be as cool as it now. What about a small block v8 under the console with a jackshaft?

Well when I was in the Keys all I saw were 25 MAKO's everywhere. back in the 90's. That was when Ihad my 25' Twin NOVA was into deep sea. Brought my 19' Wellcraft down from Michigan & ran all over the Keys one winter.

I was thinking the same thing SBC or a little diesel. My new fuel tank is under there. Deff dont want to pull it out if we dont need to. Nice stainless certified tank. I think the 165 is pretty dependable & want to keep it the way she is. seems like she is happy with the I/O Outdrive has already been done.

I saw this on ClassicMako site...are you sure its a V? The liner doesnt look right to me...early 70s liners were TOTALLY different and the deck where the rub rail is attactched at the bow doesnt look right either.

Dont get me wrong, it looks lik an awesome project...just have V-doubts.

Sure smarter people will chime in!

What is the HIN? (hull identification number)

It has to be a Wellcraft V20. If it is not, then It was pulled from a V20 mold and another sticker slapped on it. Right now I have two tabs open and toggling between the pics of your boat and my boat, I can spot no differences in the strakes aka "steps", the only difference I see is your hull does not have such a curve in the rubrail line about midways. I am going by the outside hull only, not the cap.

That is what I was going by the chines in the bow the Hull is a V for sure, seems like the top has a few differences in the rubrail & no distinct midway rise.

My personal opinion is that I have never seen a Mako with the much flair in the bow. It has to be a v20. There are definitly some mods done to the stern, you can tell by the way the rubrail comes to an imediate stop at the transom and does not return to the transom also the back exterior " transom rail" looks like its been glassed on. And also look at the way the cap/liner does that offset at the transom.

Union laker, look real close at the transom and in key places in the back and see if you can see where she's been glassed and faired maybe some imperfections in the glass work will tell a story.

Welcome to the site!

Sure looks like a V-20 hull...and definately looks like a home made transom...to me anyway.

The 3 button trim switch is from the 70's.
