New Old V20 In Michigan

Well here she is the new to me Wellcraft V20, looks like early 70's

What do you guys think the vintage is. Has a 165 Merc I/O and new fuel tank. So i got that going for me. She is a little ruff around the edges.
Floors seem solid there is no hatch for the fuel tank,

Transome sounds good with a mallet. will drill some holes for further inspection. Time for the power washer to meet old boat.

So now where do I go from here. has rebuilt lower unit & new bellows. Engine has some water in it. Should I
go thru the old 250 or find a good freshwater 165 round here? howdo you tell the engine year?. Is there a serial number directory? Anybody have a good 165?
Is that the best power plant for her? I want it to be a solid fishing boat to runaround on the great lakes.

A i/o center console V20? Your kidding me right? That is a badass combo. Does the engine run? Look on the transom on the starboard side below the rubrail and there should be a hull identification number. Two of those numbers are the year. It will start with a 7. Yours is probably a 70s model it could be early 80s. What are your plans for the boat? Keep the motor or go to outboard? Welcome to wellcraftv20.com

Thanks Jason I was wondering it it came like this or was a a home-do job.

Looks like a tuna clipper with that high transom. The guys all said it was a MAKO. Title said it was a 20' 1972 Boston Whaler -

I had a couple twin NOVA'a & Love Wellcrafts. Best thing for it is tyo go thru the 165. or better yet anybody got a good one in the shed?

I think you are the first i/o center console V20 owner on here, at least that i know of. That is a cool looking rig.

I could not find one anywhere that is why I thought it was a Home Do Job.
So they actually made these things. I love the freeboard on her!
Time for the :part:To get started on a.:nic:

Repower options are rebuild the 165 or find a nice long block. anyone have any bright ideas? This is my first CC could not afford the 254 MAKO yet. LOL She looks to be pretty seaworthy good enuff for the Great Lakes.

Looks like a serious detailing and it will look good.

That's easy enough - one day and won't look like the same boat.

Best of luck with it.

The V20 is just as seaworthy as any Mako. I take my V out more than thirty miles in the Gulf. I wish I can help you with the engine. But I like outboards. All I can say is bracket and a 200 Mercury but then that would not be as cool as it now. What about a small block v8 under the console with a jackshaft?

Well when I was in the Keys all I saw were 25 MAKO's everywhere. back in the 90's. That was when Ihad my 25' Twin NOVA was into deep sea. Brought my 19' Wellcraft down from Michigan & ran all over the Keys one winter.

I was thinking the same thing SBC or a little diesel. My new fuel tank is under there. Deff dont want to pull it out if we dont need to. Nice stainless certified tank. I think the 165 is pretty dependable & want to keep it the way she is. seems like she is happy with the I/O Outdrive has already been done.

I saw this on ClassicMako site...are you sure its a V? The liner doesnt look right to me...early 70s liners were TOTALLY different and the deck where the rub rail is attactched at the bow doesnt look right either.

Dont get me wrong, it looks lik an awesome project...just have V-doubts.

Sure smarter people will chime in!

Oh and stay here...even if it isnt a V its closer than a Mako! AND we here want to help you spend all your $$$$

BGreen will have you hanging a SevenMarine on there before you know it!!
