thanks spare. i finally got up the nerve to pull the trigger on the deal for that 89 470 mercruiser from Pennsylvania. i am bringing my v to him on sunday. who knows with the weather we are having in new york i just mite be able to give her a try at the end of the week. very excited to see the difference in power from the 3.0 to the 470. spent a year putting this boat togeather and was very dissapointed in the power. cant wait. thanks again for the help,

89 model should be a a 165 or 180 3.7L a 470 is an earlier model with the small heat exchanger and forward coolant reservoir. Do you have any pics?

the motor i'm told is an 89, same as the boat. i will do pics after i'm totally done with her this spring . after the engine swap all i have left to do is glass and gelcoat a cover for the fuel tank , as of of now it is starboard and as we all know no caulk or silicone will adhear to starboard,i only found this out after gelcoating the deck. but yes plenty of pics will be posted Spare!

on an 89 engine, the coolant reservoir should be part of the exhaust riser, the exhaust manifold should be made out of aluminum, while the exhaust riser/reservoir is cast iron. There were some early issues with the gasket leaking into #4 cylinder. It would be prudent to pull the spark plugs and do a compression test on the engine. Also look at the heat exchanger, it should be 4" in diameter, earlier ones were 3". Take a good look at the charging system, its built into the engine balancer, look at the windings behind the balancer to see if you can spot any corrosion. While you have your head down there, look for signs of antifreeze leaking from a small hole right at the base of the front timing cover, its a weep hole to allow coolant that has gone past the cam seals to leak out.
