don't know how to get from there to you, but I know a guy n Texas that has a complete 4.3 motor/transom/drive for sale(you probably get the boat to go with it) pretty cheap. The boat was running, but the floor and stringers are bad and he decided to sell the parts rather than repair

thanks spare! i think i just found a 1989 470 Pa. lake engine where i am on long island, just sitting here getting up the nerve to pull the trigger on the deal. this guy did a swap for a 4.3 and thats how he came about this engine. what i like about this deal is that the guy i'm buying the motor from is going to install it for a winter price and says he can sell my 3.0 with no problem. just thinking aloud,:nice:

you should replace the gear ratio in the drive when you do the swap(1.98 to 1.84), but that being said, you will probably be fine just swapping props, try a Mercury Mirage prop to hold all that torque, go up at least 2 numbers in pitch from what you are running now

thanks spare. i finally got up the nerve to pull the trigger on the deal for that 89 470 mercruiser from Pennsylvania. i am bringing my v to him on sunday. who knows with the weather we are having in new york i just mite be able to give her a try at the end of the week. very excited to see the difference in power from the 3.0 to the 470. spent a year putting this boat togeather and was very dissapointed in the power. cant wait. thanks again for the help,

89 model should be a a 165 or 180 3.7L a 470 is an earlier model with the small heat exchanger and forward coolant reservoir. Do you have any pics?

the motor i'm told is an 89, same as the boat. i will do pics after i'm totally done with her this spring . after the engine swap all i have left to do is glass and gelcoat a cover for the fuel tank , as of of now it is starboard and as we all know no caulk or silicone will adhear to starboard,i only found this out after gelcoating the deck. but yes plenty of pics will be posted Spare!

on an 89 engine, the coolant reservoir should be part of the exhaust riser, the exhaust manifold should be made out of aluminum, while the exhaust riser/reservoir is cast iron. There were some early issues with the gasket leaking into #4 cylinder. It would be prudent to pull the spark plugs and do a compression test on the engine. Also look at the heat exchanger, it should be 4" in diameter, earlier ones were 3". Take a good look at the charging system, its built into the engine balancer, look at the windings behind the balancer to see if you can spot any corrosion. While you have your head down there, look for signs of antifreeze leaking from a small hole right at the base of the front timing cover, its a weep hole to allow coolant that has gone past the cam seals to leak out.
