it turns out that there was a little round rubber washer in the solenoid that I neglected to take out. Once I got that out of there it worked like a charm. Bigger and better problems now though :(((
1. It seems like the starter is my problem. After changing every battery cable, starter solenoid and key switch and checking all of the connections on everything, the stupid thing still acts the same way. 6 out of 10 times when I turn the key the gear will not move up and engage the flywheel. ![]() 2. To compound things, I believe the carbs are going to have to be rebuilt; when the starter gear does engage, many times the engine does not want to start and if it does it doesn't want to idle. Having said ALL of that, it appears to work better when hooked to the ear muffs in the driveway then it does when I put it in the water. Imagine me the other day at the VERY BUSY boat dock with a boat that neither idles (without stalling) or wants to start!?! UUUUUUGGGHH!!!! ![]() Once the engine (1984 Evinrude 150) starts, it runs great. Very strong and purrs....

I just ordered an Arco starter from eBay that I ended up not needing and I can't return it. It was used to crank an engine over a few times, other than that it is brand new. I got a great deal and only paid $68 plus shipping for it, i'll give it to you for $60 including shipping.
This is the part number Evinrude/Johnson Arco Starter Part No. 5372 The ad said it Replaces 385529 389954 585051 585057 586283 Research it and let me know if it would work for you. |

Sounds like you are going to need a new starter if your battery checks out. I had a similar issue where the starter just wouldn't spin up fast enough to engage the flywheel. Well after replacing the battery and not solving the problem I pulled the starter and a mechanic bench tested it. Was spinning but the brushes were so worn that it just didn't have enough umph to get up and going. New starter and she was running like a champ.
