cfelton, yes the valve is to control air flow. That combined with the other nipples and caps (or you can just use the fridge magnets) allow adjustment for airflow and temp control.

Mine has been holding good with about half valve open and one hole open about half way..give or take. Changes with temps and humidity of course.
