after replacing the sending unit & guage a few times, i just keep the mileage on my gps and estimate mpg @ 2 and figure 120 mile range and fill up accordingly. i can usually nail the gallons within 2 or 3 .

i don't think it matters. but on mine, the float was pointing toward the starboard side.
