I spent a lil' time in New Bern. Not much there and along way to blue water.

I'm wondering where some nice big fresh water lakes are worth checkin' out. North or South Carolina. Anyone know?

NC - Yadkin chain: High Rock Lake, Badin Lake, Tuckertown
Catawba chain: Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, Mountain Island Lake

On the Virginia border there's Kerr Lake aka Buggs Island.

SC - Lake Multree / Lake Marion aka Santee

I spend a lot of time on High Rock which is close by for me. I've been to Norman, Badin and Wylie several times. Norman is really big and can be rough in peak boating season, also easy to get lost (ask me how I know). Fishing is getting better. At one time it was known as the dead sea. To give you an idea of how big it is, Lake Norman has more shorline than the state of North Carolina! That's raw coastline, not including all the shores around the outer banks.

Wylie and High Rock are similar in size and fishing. Badin is a good place to chase stripers. High Rock is full of threadfin and hickory shad. A lot of people catch bait in High Rock to fish in Badin, although High Rock has a larger average size fish, Badin has the numbers. My wife's boss, also a fishing guide, once said all a striper has to do to eat on High Rock is swim with his mouth open. Striper fishing is picking up at the Rock since the drought of 2002 which took it down around 25 feet. It is a relatively shallow lake to begin with...at around 50 ft depth, + or - around the dam.
