My rule of thumb is to use a manufacturers oil. These guys know that they have to warranty their motors so they have a better quality oil. The Walmart in my town has the Quicksilver and the Evinrude xd-25 for @ $22/gal. We've always referred to Penzoil as "yellow death". The last advice that I have is that if you are still using the VRO, premix a little oil in your gas as insurance.

I have 15+ gallons that I've collected from blown engines that I've parted out . . . Should be enough to get me started this year :) I haven't had to buy oil for the last 3 years.

My local dealer has bulk oil for $8/gal.....BYOB (bring your own bottle).

Back when I was still 2-strokin', I saved a couple of gal-sized oil bottles...took them to my dealer and he filled them from his 55 gal drum at a huge discount
