Probably just needs readjusting on the cable, or the cable could be getting worn and not fully engageing the gears.

I hope it turns out to be a minor problem for you step.....but......The one and only Merc I owned did something very similar. At no more than 1/4 throttle it would suddenly feel as if I was bouncing the motor off a bunch of rocks. I quickly threw it in neutral and felt the knot in my stomach swell. Long story short the "clutch dogs" in the lower unit were shot. Have you looked at your lower unit oil lately? Hope it's only a minor thing for ya Step, as I recall fixing it wasn't cheap. Best of luck.

phester,nothings cheap anymore
from what my friends are telling me[you guys] i hope its only an adjustment on the cable.Im bringing it to anglers marine in seabright nj there the best around as for the noise on the trim im afraid it might be more than alittle grease but i want to fix the problems.If i can hold off on the trim for now i will wait but the bumping from the engine i have to fix cause i know something is not right ill keep you informed and let you know how it turns out for future refferance i hope its not to much money my wife is going to kill me so if you go on craiges list in a couple of weeks and see a 1978 steplift for sale you know she won but i dont think that would come to that

yes sir it was the shift cable adjusted no charge you heard it right they didnt charge me
