I am only averaging about 2.25 out of my 2000 Johnson, but those loopers are known for drinking gas and oil so I can't really complain.

CY, what kinda milage are you getting? We got the same setup. My 170 I/O has been bored .040 oversized, and I can see it could take a little more fuel. Maybe Ill rejet the carb with a couple size smaller jets and give it a try.

check the power valve(brass thing in the bottom of the fuel bowl, they tend to get crap in them and stick open and will dribble gas into the engine, also check the plunger that pushes the power valve open, make sure its not sticking. Some of the rebuild kits come woth a new power valve, I ususally don't use them, they don't seem to be of the same quality as the ones that are in th carb from the begining. Do you have the Mercarb( one idle mixture screw) or Rochester(two idle mixture screws)? If you have the Mercarb, try and find a Rochester off of an 888 Mecruiser, they will adapt with a little work, and will run, idle, and perform much better than that Mercarb, at the very least, try to find a later model Mercarb that doesn't use the double lipped accelerator pump, the internal metering was redesigned to fix soem of the issues with earlier Mercarbs

Thanks Spare, I've got a Mercarb on it now. I rebuilt it before I put it on and it runs really good. The original carb is a rochester with the 2 jets at the bottom of the barrels. I put a kit in it but the jet screws were broken off flush with the carb base. It ran ok but leaked a little gas into the throat after I cut it off. I removed the retaining tab, spring and ckeck ball and cleaned it well. After replacing all the leak stopped, but with the jets broken off I couldnt make any adjustments on the high speed side. Ill try and get those broken jets out and replace them and maybe try it again. Thanks again!!
