I got one of these, tried it, did not work. I'm alittle nervous to bang too much and bugger the threads.

I dont know if this will help but use this screwdriver ALWAYS on a lower unit. its short and wont slip off as much http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...ed+screwdriver

it helps sometimes to have someone else apply pressure while you turn the screwdrive with a wrench. Either that or just buy a new lower unit

I have taken a hammer and a small blunt chisel, and tapped the slot in the direction the screw need to go to come out. heat won't hurt either, there not anything around that screw inside that you can damage with heat( as long as its not excessive)

The above sugestions should do it for you...you could also place a piece of brass over the screw and tap it in a couple of times, solid and short taps and try again, remember righty tightty lefty loossy.

Like the others said. soak with P B Blaster for at least 30 min, Tap straight on with 1/2 in. brass rod . Then angle a large screwdriver in the counterclockwise direction to the slot and tap. It should come on out. If not tie a rag soaked in penetrating oil onto it and leave a few days, then try again. Its a really short screw. When ya get it out sling that b***h a flying!!
