Being new to saltwater fishing, I have no equipment. I want to pick up a rod and reel combo for me and one for my daughter. Is it realistic to think that I can spend 50-100$ on a combo for each of us?
If so, any recommendations on the brand of rod and reel. Penn? Daiwa? Shakespear? I am thinking of a spinning reel to start out. (multipurpose?) The 3-4 times I have been out so far I have always used my buddy's equipment. Pablo

Hey man, I'm gonna guess your going to be in the Chesapeake Bay. It depends on what kind of fishing your going to do. Trout, flounder, spot, croaker you can use spinning tackle. If your going to troll for strippers, blue fish you want a conventional reel.
Spinning tackle: 15 to 20 lb class rod (mono ) 6 1/2 ft rod med action I'd try and get a deal on a Penn combo, and I've been considering trying an Okuma combo, reasonably priced and I have two others that, while not being fancy, have been dependable and trouble free. Conventional tackle for trooling; Either a Penn 113h reel and matching rod or a 330 gti penn rod and reel combo. I like the level wind on the 330 gti and it easily handles 30 lb mono JMHO |

Thanks Franco. That's what I needed was a place to start.
Yes, Chesapeake Bay all the way. We sent for croaker and spot back in August(?). Then Striper last weekend. I guess surprisingly we used spinning reels to go for Striper.

thats cool if your casting topwaters or jigging, and a lot of fun. You gotta go to the 3rd island on the ocean side. troll a strech 25 prarllel to the bridge about 30 feet off the rocks , just at thend of the rocks there is a 15 foot drop off (you'll be heading towards the 2nd island) that
I always had good luck with, 10 or 12 passes was enough for 4 guys to get their limit of good size strippers |
