hammer, wouldn't one of these style ladder be better for using with fins on?

Yepper. I have the same one. I simply want to mount the X-Mas tree ladder to the underside of a strong swim platform. That ladder there is rated to 400 pounds. That will support my dive gear and me with no bending.
