I have a question for those who have been through the process before and maybe willing give some advice. What is the success rate of the average outboard rebuild? I have heard most only last 100 hours or so after being rebuild. Is it something a non-professional, but mechanically inclined individual like myself can tackle and expect some level of reliability for the motor afterward? Is machining an issue or can any good machine under take the task? Any pitfalls I should look out for. Kamikaze

i've rebuilt more than several hands full of Johnson's and Evinrudes and also a few Mercury's and couple Yamaha's. Only had to go back into 1 v4 120 that had an odd issue. it broke a piston skirt. Replaced the piston and put a new Wiseco and off she went couple hundred hours since no issues.

Skools:
Are there any special tools that I might need for a OMC V6? Any difference in the tools required between a crossflow or looper rebuild? Are there any ggod books that you would recommend to work from? Thanks for your time kamikaze

no but you will need only 2 odd tools. Rod cap bolts require a 8 mm 12 point socket or 5/16 12point socket same size. Will also need an allen wrench to get 1 crank case bolt out at flywheel end.

i've got a 140 V4 OMC apart currently i'll try to get you some pic of the rod cap bolts and of the location of the allen head bolt. it's the same as a v6 just less 2 cylinders
