My neighbors house.

They are moving and have offered the house to my family for a super low price.

It is around 4000 sq ft and has a 1000 sq ft shop behind it. and is on a nice fairly flat acre of land.

Now the down side, the original part of the house was built in 1879 and the rest before 1920. It needs a lot of structural work.

Lumberslinger, wanna come south for a spell?
I would be poor from now on and would have to work on the house constantly.

Plus I would have to get my house ready to sell (yuck) and sell it.

Oh, you got wife and kids so that don't matter. ;D
Now would be a good time (economics) to swap for a lifelong (till the kids ain't under your roof) mortgage.
7 years ain't the end of it, till the kids are out it is all the same.

I bought my 1820 farmhouse 25 years ago,
then the kids went to college,
then there are always projects around the house
and any job that you think should take 1 hour
always turns into a weeklong nightmare,
because all the previous owners did things with what they thought
was the latest and greatest technology.
Example, replace a bathroom faucet, 1 hour job,
until you find the galvanized pipe is corroded and has to be replaced, so
you start pulling out the pipe to a certain point you think is safe
and replace with copper, job done, oh no, turn on the water
and find the pipes undr the kitchen sink are leaking
all due to the stress on the pipesfrom removing the bathroom pipes.
Then there is the 10 year lightning strike to the water pump,
like clock work, every ten years have to replace the pump.

Oh yeah jacking up the agging beams, fun job, not.

and on and on and on.

Oh yeah I forgot to add that nothing happens when I am home,
but I can always expect some major break when I am on a business
trip and the wife is at home.

All in all, I would not trade my home for anything,
I am surrounded by 8 acres, so there are no close neighbors,
very peaceful, I love it.

sounds like a major under taking .... keep an eye out for powder puff beatles.... they love them old houses >:(

4000 sq is a big house ;D ;D ;D room for a couple more kids.... :o

4000 sr. foot home is super big. New homes in Lewes that I can afford are 290,000 for only a 1500 sq. foot home with a 1/4 arce lot. :-/ :'(

Parish, I love your pad. I always loved old homes, they have so much history...but repairs. :-*

Well, last night I was ready to buy it and the wife was saying no. Luckily, so far only one of us at a time wants to buy it. (We seem to take turns swapping our opinion each day) I would feel best not buying it.

We are praying on it.

Hammer, most houses this size around here are 400-500k. This one is around 150k. But it needs 50-100k worth of work to make it worth 350-400k.

If I had the money to hire someone to do the work I would be all over it. But being poor, I would have to do all the work myself and become a slave to remodeling/restoring.
