Default Mercury Optimax

Well my plans to rebuild the old Seadrive are now pretty much abandoned due to cost of the rebuild of a 23 year old motor.

I am going to go ahead with the new motor on a bracket from the get go.. Instead of waiting for winter...

I am looking at a Mercury Optimax 175 on a flotation bracket (brand not decided yet) or a Porta bracket.

Does anyone have any real data with this setup on a V20?? I have read some pretty good test results on a similiar hull, good performance as well as good MPG.

I would appreciate all feedback, both good & bad....

Thanks,

I have had good performance with Oti-max engines( some of the most fuel efficient engines I have ever run), but I would not own one that was out of warranty, the accesories can easily total out the price of the engine. You can have a good block, but somethiing bolted on the outside that went bad can cost more than the motor is worth( this goes with any direct injected 2 stroke).

I have a 99 200hp Opti Blue Water 2 stoke injected. I have had no major issues. Just run it dry if you let it sit long. Injectors get varnished if they sit w/gas in them!

I'm glad to hear that you had good luck with an Optimax. I plan on repowering next year with a 200/225 Optimax depending on how good of deal I can get.

the 225 Opti is one of the most under rated engines out there. When Mercury was first competeing with the Yamaha 225 4s( before Mercury was selling the same engine), there were comparison done in several magazines, the 225 Opti would dyno out close to 250 hp.

At one of my local dealershere in Houston there is only 600.00 difference between a 200 and 225 Optimax. I'm hoping early next year when they start running specials I might find a good deal.

I still think that if I bought new, I would buy Mercury over the Etec due to tests I have read....

However, my situation has changed.. a guy I know is repowering his GW with 4 Strokes & I am buying both of his 150 Yamaha's...

One on the bracket & a spare.....

I also have located a 92 Yamaha 200 HP, 25" motor for a couple of grand locally but am concerned about the weight on a bracket compared to the performance gain..

So for now it is a 150 Yamaha on a D&D bracket... ;D
