Default From straight 6 to a 4.3 V-6 costs

Anyone, have any idea how much it should cost me to change out the old straight 6 to a 4.3 v-6 mercruiser along with a new outdrive? I am guessing around $6,500 Does this sound about right?

I would guess closer to $8-9K for a 4.3 repower. The 3.0L package is running around $6K the last time I checked. Don't forget new harness's and cables as well as guages while your at it.

I recently re-powered with a new 4.3 litre v6 mercruiser. I did not have the outdrive replaced. I purchased the engine for $3800 over ebay, with $200 for shipping. I had my mechanic take out the old engine and replace it with the new one. That ended up costing about $2800, which included $900 for replacing the stringers and some $ for a new bilge pump and tilt trim pump. So, I put about $7000 into just getting the engine replaced. I purchased the engine from NuWave boat restoration in New Jersey. They frequently sell engines and packages over ebay. I am very happy with the new engine.

I just checked ebay, and NuWave has a price of $3899 or best offer on a 4.3 mercruiser complete with Y pipes.

I was also recommended bracket and outboard. It would be the way I would go except for cost. I am not confident in used outboards. They can be a great deal, or a piece of trouble. Brand new outboards on a bracket are prohibitively expensive. Used outboards on a bracket are fine for those who can do the work (or most of it) themselves. Unless your sterndrive is toast, I would go with a new motor (like mine, but maybe a v8 with 220 hp) and overhaul of the outdrive.
